The course introduces to the knowledge of major topics that characterise the contemporary debate in the philosophy of literature, in different areas of philosophical analysis and theory of literature. Analyses revolve around the comparison between literary language and ordinary language, in a perspective that focuses on the relationship between fiction, expression, and imagination comparing different answers to the idea of the cognitive meaning of literature.
The student, on successful completion of this module, will be able to:

1. identify theorical and historical-critical dimensions
2. critically engage with philosophical arguments organizing them
3. differentiate positions within the contemporary philosophical landscapes
A knowledge of international literature. Additional and supplementary materials will be made available online on the course's moodle space. Tools to refine one's knowledge at the intersection of the two disciplines will also be recommended.

«Literature and perception»

The course will focus the problem of perception in the relations of literature, history, psychology and philosophy. Among the main perspectives of the course is the creation of a space for discussion and analysis in order to clarify the concepts of fiction, imagination, and memory in the relations of the different disciplines. This relationship is investigated through analytical readings of different materials: poems, novels, plays and films.

Method of final evaluation: oral examination based on problems and readings considered during the course. Attendance during lectures and oral presentation during the seminar part of the course (20%) will form part of the assessment, together with the final oral examination.
Method of instruction: the main teaching methods of the course are the lecture and the lecture-discussion. Every student will be encouraged to participate in the discussion of the materials planning individual or small group seminars, in which new texts will be presented and discussed in relation to the course readings. Lectures may be supplemented by external seminars.
