HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY II

Introduction to medieval philosophy.

Ability to understand a medieval philosophical text, to be aware of the general subjects of medieval philosophy and to have a deeper knowledge of the main topics of the course.

There is no mandatory prerequisite, but a previous general knowledge of history of ancient and medieval philosophy could be useful.

We will focus on Augustine's "Cassiciacum dialogues", and in particular on the De vita beata.

The precise program of the course, including handbooks, texts, essays, will be communicated later.

Agostino d'Ippona, La vita felice (De beata vita), in Agostino, Tutti i dialoghi, a cura di G. Catapano, pp. 226-296. Questa è l'edizione che si utilizzerà in aula, ma ogni edizione va bene, preferibilmente se commentata e dotata di un'introduzione filosofica, che sarà ugualmente oggetto di esame.

The modality of examination consists in an oral exam, but the precise nature of the exam will be explained at the beginning of the course.
