This course is one of the core training activities of Bachelor's Degree Programme in Science and Technologies for Cultural Heritage, and enables students to apply the knowledge acquired during module I of the course of General and Inorganic Chemistry, and to be introduced to chemical laboratory practice.

The instructional goals are:
1) learning how to correctly perform the most common operations in the chemical lab (handling of reagents, use of glassware, preparation of solutions, etc.);
2) applying the knowledge of General and Inorganic Chemistry at a practical level;
3) conducting scientific experiments in groups;
4) applying the scientific method to problem solving;
5) writing a laboratory activity notebook;
5) writing reports of laboratory activities.
1. Knowledge and understanding
i) Know chemical laboratory practice.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
i) Apply correctly the basic techniques used in the chemical laboratory for conducting scientific experiments;
ii) Ability to use chemical laws and concepts to solve practical problems according to the scientific method;
iii) Write a report of laboratory activities.

3. Critiquing skills
i) Ability to evaluate the logical consistency of results obtained experimentally with the application of the laws and theoretical concepts previously learnt.

4. Communication skills
i) Ability to communicate the acquired knowledge and the result of its application using appropriate terminology and methods, both orally and in writing;
ii) Ability to interact with teachers, technical staff and colleagues in a respectful and constructive manner;
iii) Ability to interact in the context of group work.

5. Learning skills
i) Ability to be autonomous in collecting experimental data;
ii) Ability to take notes, selecting and collecting information according to its importance and priority, and to share them with one's colleagues.

The method of learning assessment consists of an individual oral test, after the assessment of the reports on the laboratory activity carried out in working groups.

The laboratory reports are written cooperatively by the members of each group and must describe the adopted experimental approach, the used methods and the obtained experimental results. The aim of the assessment of the reports is to check the students' ability to deal with experimental problems, to correctly process and interpret the collected experimental data, and to formally report their work in writing. The assessment of the reports contributes 50% of the final grade. The reports are due no later than two weeks before the oral examination.

The individual oral examination consists of a series of questions (3-5) on various aspects of the experiments described in the "Contents" section. The student must demonstrate proficiency in the used laboratory techniques, the ability to describe them formally and interpret the obtained results taking into account the acquired theoretical knowledge of General and Inorganic Chemistry. The oral examination lasts about 30 minutes and contributes 50% of the final grade.
The course is organised in laboratory experiences.
Attendance of at least 80% of the laboratory activities is mandatory.
