The course of Portuguese and Brazilian Literature 2 MOD 2 is common to all the curricula available in the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Language, Civilization and the Science of Language. The course aims to provide an overview of the relations from Brazilian poetry and popular music in a period from the Modernism to nowadays.

1. Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the relation of sound and word, with a particular study of some popular songs from the twentieth century till nowadays. Knowledge of socio-cultural and historical-political dynamics that affect literature and popular Brazilian music production; ability to understand the importance of the poetic phenomenon; ability to understand some of the main poems and the main songs of Braziliam culture both in terms of content and in terms of their socio-cultural, literary, and artistic implications.
2. Applied knowledge and understanding: to apply the knowledge acquired to the context of music in the historical-cultural and political framework in which they were produced.
3. Autonomy of judgement: ability to acquire and apply adequate critical tools to analyze poetry or a popular song, on a thematic and stylistic-formal level, also putting them in relation to the context.
4. Communicative skills: understanding the exposition of an academic discourse; knowing how to present in a clear and coherent way a studied problem; knowing how to express concepts with clarity and terminological precision.
5. Ability to learn: learning how to recognize poetic genres or musical genres and think about the meaning of metaphors, tone or musical sense in a more complex way.

Basic knowledge of European and American history and culture.

The course is developed in two parts; a first dedicated to the study of the relationship between sound and word; some musical concepts, and how music can affect culture. The second part follows the Brazilian song in a time frame that goes from the roots of Brazilian music to today. Themes such as popular parties, samba, tropicalia, rock, political struggles, will be treated in relation to the poetry made starting from Modernism.
In the first segment, an in-depth analysis will be dedicated to the main concepts as in the second segment a part of the work of the various poets/composers mentioned will be analysed, framing them in the historical context of the literary/musical movements. It will be provided: information on the authors and a summary critical perspective and texts in full version or anthology in Italian which will also be examined on the basis of previous information.

The exam will be an oral interview (consisting of some questions, 20’), in Italian in which the student's ability to read and analyse a passage taken from a text from the bibliography will be tested. All parts of the program will be considered fundamental.
The exam aims to verify the knowledge of the topics covered in the course; the understanding of the works studied, the understanding of the concepts and the quality of the exhibition and the ability to develop judgments in establishing and relationships between the topics presented during the course.
Absent students have to ask to the teacher for a particular bibliography to study.
The course will be divided into lectures and literary translation laboratories for an in-depth study of the linguistic-cultural aspects of the texts analysed during the various meetings. The course deals with literature in an interdisciplinary way; multimedia materials will be used in addition to the bibliography, such as interviews and documentaries.

Non-attending students are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course. They have to discuss a specific bibliography for the final exam.
