The course is part of the core educational activities of Iberian Studies curriculum of the Master’s Degree Program in European, American and Postcolonial Languages and Literatures and aims to deepen the knowledge of the relations between the Portuguese colonial history and novel.
1 - Knowledge and understanding: characterise different forms of relationship between Portuguese literature and colonial history; form critical consciousness about different cultures on the Portuguese language domain through one romance from Brazil and another from Macao in which the main theme is orphanage.
2 - Applied knowledge and understanding: reading the identity representations of people and their relationships from the point of view of those who are in a social level below the dominant power; do critical comments.
3 - Autonomy of judgment: to deepen the theoretical knowledge on the relationship between historiography and novel through the debate between three categories: historical novel, memorialist novel and historiographic metafiction; acquire the tools for comparative reflection regarding the themes and expressive methods used for each author.
4 - Communication skills: understand the presentation of an academic speech; knowing how to present a problem studied in a clear and coherent manner; knowing how to argue in a coherent and effective way.
5 - Ability to learn: to promote knowledge about the political history and literary systems of the countries involved, in addition to the work of each writer studied.
Knowledge of the Portuguese language, basic knowledge of the history of the Portuguese colonial empire and its decolonization.
The course aims to reflect on orphanage and its implications for a critical view of the Portugal Empire and its colonial system through the analysis of two novels: Desmundo, by Ana Miranda Rodrigues (Brazil) and Os Dores, de Henrique de Senna Fernandes (Macau). The orphanage is an issue that can destabilise the traditional history which tries to naturalize certain forms of power and some iniquities suffered by the orphans. On one hand, the idea is to read those novels reflecting on orphanage as a “supplement” in the way Joan Scott has used it to think about the history of women; on the other hand, the idea is to deepen the theoretical relations between historiography and novels, looking for 3 categories – historical novel; memories and historiographic metafiction. The course will try to highlight some historical connections between the Portuguese domains albeit characterise on the literary systems of the countries involved.

Oral test aimed verifying the degree of achievement of the expected learning outcomes. In order to pass the exam, a short written paper (5-10pp.) that discusses a subject related to the course is also required.

Lectures, seminars with preparation of compulsory and supplementary readings, commented reading of texts and documents.
Students who do not attend classes are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course.
