The Medieval "Merveilleux": an Introduction (Reading Marie of France's "Lai de Lanval").
Romance Philology is part of the didactic activities characterizing the course in Literature, and introduces students to comparative reflection on Romance languages and literatures (with particular attention to medieval texts). Lessons (second part of Romance Philology 12 CFU) aim to introduce students to the medieval theme of the "Merveilleux" (the visible manifestations of invisible realities), by reading the "Lai de Lanval" by Marie of France (1170 ca. )
Knowledge:
- basic information on Romance narrative tradition;

Skills:
- acquisition and refinement of coimparative method;
- reinforcement of skills in direct reading (translating) the Old French.
Language skills (ancient French) acquired in the course of "Romance Philology I".
Commented reading of the "Lai de Lanval" and further texts.
Original texts and essays, in digital format, will be provided by the Professor at the beginning of the course on the Moodle web platform.
The exam consists of two parts;
- verification of the ability to read a medieval script (see "Exercises of Romance Philology II");
- texts and topics covered during the lessons.
The course will consist of commented readings of novels of the "Decameron", conducted according to the traditional forms of textual analysis.

1. "Romance Philology II" is the second part of the course of "Romance Philology" for those who are required to 12 CFU of this discipline; the first part ("Romance Philology II") will be held in the first term.
2. There are personalized programs for students who can not attend classes, which will be given after a personal interview during the hours of students' reception.
3. During the year, a seminar will be organized. It will be open to undergraduates students, to students of the Graduate Program and to anyone interested. It will be dedicated to "Western Encounters with Asia (Late Ancient to Fourteenth Century)". The seminar will be divided into two parts, one per semester; his attendance will entitle any participant to 3 or 6 ECTS of activity equivalent to a Stage. Information on dates and times will be provided in early September 2021.
