The course is included in the core educational activities of the Master's Degree Programme in Philology and Italian Literature.
It aims to provide the students with the aware use of the philological method and the ability to elaborate critically the bibliography on a specific theme or discussion.
By the end of the course the student will be able to:
- read critically a Medieval Italian text, noticing linguistic, metrical and stylistic peculiarities;
- take advantage of the philological method in order to orient himself to a rich manuscript tradition;
- read consciously a critical edition, judging editor's chioses and discussing the alterative solutions suggested by the critics;
- work indipendently on seminar themes.
To have achieved the educational objectives of Principles of Philology. Foreigners attending this course are expected to be fluent in Italian and to have a good knowledge of the Italian literature (in particular Medieval period).
Reading "Vita nova"

The course offers a reading and text analysis of Dante's "Vita nova", with a particular attention for the philological problems of the text.
Students will be invited to take part in a seminar activity on the text of the work.

Not attending students must read also:
- R. Rea, Dante: guida alla Vita nuova, Roma, Carocci, 2021.
Oral exam. The examination will verify the knowledge of the theoretical problems discussed in class and of the bibliography. The student will also be asked to read and explain a passage of the texts.
