GEOGRAPHY OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The course is one of the characteristic educational activities in the Master Degree in Cultural Anthropology, Ethnology and Ethnolinguistics, and it is also available for the master's degrees in the Sciences of Antiquity and Work, Social Citizenship, Interculturality. The course provides students with the main concepts relating to geo-environmental, social and economic problems connected to relations between western countries and other geographical realities, both emerging and in precarious situations.
The aim of the course is to improve knowledge in order to develop the ability to analyze and interpret global territorial systems, capturing their geo-political and historical-cultural dynamics. The course will deal with the relationship between climate change, protection of agricultural soil and management of surface fresh water. Particular attention will be paid to the impacts of hydraulic colonization in the context of the relations between the companies in developing countries and the dominant economic strategies, focusing on the problems generated in some contexts of Latin America, South East Asia, the Middle East and East Africa.

Knowledge and understanding:
- Understand the importance of socio-economic and environmental frameworks as fundamental elements in interpreting the effects of climate change.
- Acquire the concept of hydraulic Hybris in its multiple forms, with particular regard to the role of creating / managing new water landscapes in developing countries.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
- Knowing how to evaluate the relationships between economic power, resources and international policies in the geographical contexts of post-colonialism, using procedures to analyze the environmental quality of the hydraulic heritage.
- Recognize the importance of traditional knowledge, as potential alternatives to the dominant development model.
- Interact with global digital databases to record information and independently process written text.

Judgment skills
- Interpret the geo-political complexity within today's globalization.
- Analyze social and environmental impacts with a view to sustainability.

Student must have a clear overview of the basic notions and terminology of human geography as well as sufficient knowledge of the salient features of the distribution of the climatic zones of the planet.
The student must also have a good knowledge of the concept of globalization and have basic skills in the use of digital tools for the geo-referencing of places (Google Earth, Google Map etc.).

The program will address the usual themes of development geography. Particular attention will be paid to the negative impacts of an economic model unable to control the growing gap between the north and south of the world. Some alternative agricultural economy models will be identified, also addressing the issue of the impacts of global warming in the Middle East and South East Asia. Particular attention will be devoted to the diffusion of western hydraulic models in post colonial contexts, trying to evaluate economic benefits and social impacts. Finally, the potential of ecotourism in fragile island contexts will be analyzed as a perspective for a different development model.
