This is one of the complementary courses within the "Japan" curriculum of the master degree programme in "Lingue, economie e istituzioni dell'Asia e dell'Africa Mediterranea". The course gives lectures on the contemporary histories of East Asia, including Japan. It focuses on the history of East Asia, mainly from the 20th century to the present, in global or transnational social relationships. The "global Asian history" aims to offer basic historical knowledge for understanding the present.
Knowledge and understanding:
- to know and understand the modern and contemporary history of Asia, including Japan

Applying knowledge and understanding:
- to use the knowledge of Asian history and global or transnational perspective in the research

Making judgments:
- to exercise judgment within a global (transnational) and historical perspective

Communication:
- to write a research essay by using historical knowledge and global (transnational) perspectives
It is recommended that students possess an intermediate Japanese language level (Level N3 JLPT). Moreover, students should already have a good knowledge of modern and contemporary Japanese history.
This course will provide a chronological account of the history of East Asia in the 20th century. In doing so, it focuses on issues common to all humankind (e.g. human mobility, war, environment, social movements, etc.), as well as on transnational connections and mobilities, thus covering a wide range of history not limited to East Asia.
