This is one of the characterising courses of the degree 'Languages, Civilisation and Language Sciences' where the student can acquire knowledge and understanding of the basic principles underpinning the field of Educational Linguistics and, more specifically, the field of foreign/second language teaching. The aim of the course is to develop knowledge of the basic principles underlying language acquisition/learning and the teaching of foreign/second languages, highlighting also the cultural aspects, and to develop the ability to understand their application.
Knowledge and understanding:
The student will acquire basic knowledge and understanding of: theoretical principles of language teaching, theories of language acquisition and language learning; historical development of language teaching; culture in the teaching of languages; curriculum e syllabus design; language learning assessment issues.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to make connections between theory and its implications for practice by consulting and evaluating teaching materials, elaborating exercises and tasks for specific learning needs of different groups of learners and analyse a situation for a language teaching proposal.

Making judgements:
The student will be able to interpret and evaluate the importance, for effective language learning, of various aspects dealt with on the course.

Communication skills:
The student will be able to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions clearly and show mastery of the specific language of the field.
For this course, no prerequisites are required.
Theories of language acquisition. Methods and approaches: historical development of language teaching. Language skills. The role of grammar in language teaching. Culture in language teaching. Evaluation and assessment.

Written exam: the written exam, made up of 11 multiple choice questions and 10 open questions, aims to ascertain knowledge and understanding of the aspects dealt with during the course as well as writing skills.

Attendance on-line lessons: 7 lessons (done within the time indicated) for a maximum of 2 marks (0,3 marks for each lesson). The forum-lessons focus on discussing and reflecting on different issues in language learning and teaching.
Blended: 8 on-site lessons and 7 on-line asynchronous lessons with forum activities.

The medium of instruction is Italian. However, some materials used - posted on Moodle - may also be in English.
