HISTORY OF APPLIED ARTS

This is an optional course of the Master's Degree Programme in History of Arts and Conservation of Artistic Heritage. Participants from other programmes are welcome, but kindly asked to inform the instructor about their participation.

The course focuses on the broad spectrum of art objects and techniques formerly classified as "the applied arts / the decorative arts", the scholarly issues raised by this subject and, more broadly, the relations among the "pre-industrial arts". Depending on the academic year, the chronological focus can vary from the Antiquity to the twentieth century.

- Awareness of the different methodological approaches developed for the study of pre-industrial objects.

- Familiarity with the art techniques and object typologies presented in the course.

-Ability to present an object focusing on its typology, materials and making process.

Students with diverse academic backgrounds are welcome. Knowledge of Western art before 1800 is desirable, but not compulsory.

The introduction will address issues raised by the hierarchization of the arts, their interpretation and musealization according to material and technical criteria. The body of the course will discuss specific art techniques and typologies in their development from the Antiquity, focusing primarily on rock crystal, hard stone and precious stone engraving, and secondarily on glass making. Examplary cases will enable the participants to discuss historiographic and methodological issues concerning the geography of art and its application to the art techniques.

Written exam (open-answer questions)

The evaluation will consider:
10% partecipation and presentations
90% result of the exam

Frontal, but dialogic lessons and papers of the participants. A part of the latter may be based on individual or group visits to museums of the Venetian area, depending on their accessibility.

Moodle’s blackboard is the official channel for every announcement concerning the organization of the course and the sharing of materials. All the participants are requested to sign in the moodle course.
