Patristics is a course of the "History from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age". The course is also offered as an exam to complement the course in "Science of antiquity: literatures, history and archaeology".

The course of Patristics offers students the indispensable training for a knowledge of Christian literature from its origins to the seventh century in the various linguistic and cultural fields. In addition, the course of Patristics offers students an overview of the transition from ancient religions to Christianity in the early centuries. The course also offers the opportunity to enrich the knowledge of Greek, Latin and Byzantine literatures.
The students will have acquired:
- knowledge of the content and method of Patristic Lierature;
- a knowledge of the Patristic literarure and in its different periods;
- competence in the critical study of Patristic texts.
A knowledge of Greek and Roman and Byzantine history is recommended.
The course is an introduction to patristic literature from the origins to John of Damascus, through the study of the authors and main genres.

The Wiley Blackwell Companion to Patristics Edited by Ken Parry, Chichester, 2015.
Claudio Moreschini - Enrico Norelli, Manuale di letteratura cristiana antica greca e latina, Brescia, 2006.
The texts of the patristic authors will be indicated and uploaded on the moodle platform.

Oral exam 70% + Work on texts during lessons 30%.
