GEOGRAPHY I

The course, offered in parallel with Prof. Francesco Vallerani’s course, is a basic activity for the Bachelor’s Degree in Conservazione e Gestione dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali. As such, it aims to offer a reference frame on some approaches, concepts and topics of human geography. The main objective of the course is to provide some tools to know and interpret the territorial dynamics and anthropogenic transformation of the nature, as well as the related environmental problems.

1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1 Acquiring the basic concepts of human geography
1.2 Knowledge of the classical schools of thought in human geography
1.3. Understanding the importance of the evolutive relation between nature and human societies

2. Applying knowledge and analyzing:
2.1 Being able to use the above-mentioned concepts to interpret today’s world
2.1. Acquiring consciousness of one’s lived space and everyday landscape, as well as of the variety of landscapes, also as cultural heritage
2.3. Recognizing environmental and landscape risk and/or degradation

3. Ability to judge:
3.1 Recognizing the geo-historical evolution of landscapes; individuate contemporary dynamics and their impacts on landscape
3.2 Evaluating environmental impacts in the light of sustainability

4. Communication skills:
4.1 Writing in a logic, coherent and synthetic style, in order to expose the knowledge gained
4.2 Use of an appropriate semantic and linguistic register

General knowledge of the Italian landscape and territory. Ability to read basic cartography.

The course will provide some elements useful to narrow approaches, key concepts and objects of classic and contemporary human geography. The focus is especially brought on the topic of landscape, in relation environment, space, place and territory; then, landscape will be considered as a value and as cultural heritage, also in relation to tourism. Case studies: wetland and land reclamation landscapes.

Telematic written exam with open questions targeted at the measurement of knowledge, the ability to apply knowledge and understanding and the ability to judge. For students attending classes, the exam questions will be on lesson’s notes and on the 2 specified textbooks. For not attending students, questions will be on the 3 specified textbooks. The exams lasts 75 minutes.

Lectures with discussion and seminars (depending on COVID 19 crisis).
