As part of the master in Economics and administration of arts and cultures, this teaching is based on an in-depth study of the production and organization processes that regulate the operatic music market since the late nineteenth century.
At the end of the course the student will have acquired the terminology related to opera production and organization, and will be able to understand the texts that make use of it; he will also be able to contextualize facts and figures in a historical-critical form. The student will have acquired information on the complex production machine within the theatrical field and will be able to use it to formulate hypotheses and adequate research questions. He will be able to interact competently with teachers and colleagues both in the lessons and in any workshops organized at the end of the semester. The student will have the knowledge to formulate autonomous evaluations, to orient himself in the reference bibliography and to prepare short presentations on the topics in question.
Interest and motivation to learn the production mechanisms that regulate the past and present music market.
The course will allow us to understand, through the analysis of archive sources, how the musical production process takes shape in the example of opera production and organization. It will be possible to reconstruct the circuits of various opera companies, map the relationships between agents and theater directors, identifying the contacts that publishers and their representatives have had with the latter. It will also be possible to understand, thanks to concrete examples, the strategies implemented by the impresarios to secure one or more opera seasons in an environment of close competition, and the mechanisms that regulate the recruitment of the artistic personnel. Some reflections will be made on the working conditions of singers and musicians, in reference and comparison with the current panorama.
