This course is part of the curriculum of the Master in Economics and Administration of Arts and Culture, which provides key knowledge and skills for the management of artistic and cultural institutions. Visual Culture II (6 ECTS) includes an oral examination. It constitutes the second module of the Visual Culture course (I and II, 12 ECTS) and introduces the student to the theories and practices of visual culture industries making use of case studies from different parts of the world. The course provides students with the theoretical and methodological tools to understand and analyze the economics of visual culture in global contexts.
Having successfully completed this course, students be able to:
- have knowledge of a range of key concepts in visual culture and contemporary critical debates;
- identify and deploy appropriate critical approaches to the analysis of the production and consumption of visual culture;
- demonstrate a depth of critical and analytical thinking in relation to visual cultural artefacts and their contexts;
- engage in ethical practices and situate their analyses in the context of the broader field;
- demonstrate the ability to use oral language to describe, analyse and contextualize visual material and production;
- effectively manage your own workload, meet deadlines and work independently;
- formulate and express complex ideas and arguments; and
- identify and develop advanced research ideas and apply appropriate research methods.
No particular prerequisites or basic knowledge are required for participation in the course, although some notions of aesthetics and media history could be useful but not essential. Willingness to actively participate in classroom work and conversation is required.
The course introduces advanced theories of global visual culture. The course is organized around five topics (one topic per week). They are Identity, Technology, Global concerns, Public history and memory, and Institutions. Each topic is a focal point for a discussion in a given week. We will explore the interconnections between visual culture and identity, visual culture and technology, and so on, paying attention to both historical and current debates. In all cases, we will analyse how visual culture has been used to articulate current concerns, applying theories of the visual alongside theories of culture, identity, globalization, and so on. As a result, our consideration of the visual culture will be inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary.
The course programme and the teaching materials, which include readings, audiovisual materials, films and webpages, will be made available on the course homepage through Moodle.
There will be an oral exam at the end of the course.
Lectures accompanied by projection of images, videos and commentary and discussion activities in the classroom, for which active participation of the students is required.
