This course is part of the curriculum of the Master in Economics and Administration of Arts and Culture, which provides key knowledge and skills for the management of artistic and cultural institutions. Visual Culture I (6 ECTS) is a characterizing exam in the historical-artistic area of ​​the study plan. It constitutes the first module of the Visual Culture course (I and II, 12 ECTS) and introduces the student to the complexity of the visual world surrounding us, providing him/her with the theoretical and methodological tools to understand and analyze it.
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

1) Knowledge and understanding
Demonstrate knowledge of the academic literature on visual culture and understand the theoretical and analytical frameworks that can be applied in reading visual texts.
Understand how images are both reflective of and shaped by the social, political, cultural, technological and economic context in which they are created.

2) Applied knowledge and understanding
Evaluate and apply a range of analytical approaches and techniques employed in the interpretation of images.
Describe and interpret a variety of visual materials originated by different technological means in different historical periods, highlighting the interconnections with the context that created them.

3) Judgement skills
Develop the ability to analyze and critique visual materials and to establish a convincing and original argument in support of one’s own judgement.

4) Communication skills
Articulate and communicate knowledge and support one’s own critical insights verbally, in classroom and group discussion, and through writing.

5) Learning skills
Demonstrate an understanding of interdisciplinary analytical methodology and the ability to apply it autonomously for analysis on a variety of media in the visual culture field.
No particular prerequisites or basic knowledge are required for participation in the course, although some notions of aesthetics and media history could be useful but not essential. Willingness to actively participate in classroom work and conversation is required.
Visual culture surrounds us and shapes our thinking and approach to the world. This course provides an introduction to the discipline of visual culture and its key issues. It will analyze images as forms of visual communication and explore their role in producing cultural meaning. Students will be introduced to different theoretical approaches to visual analysis and will learn how to apply these theories on a variety of materials and practices of visual culture, including fine art, photography, film, installations, exhibitions and digital media.
The course programme and the teaching materials, which include readings, audiovisual materials, films and webpages, will be made available on the course homepage through Moodle.
There will be an oral exam at the end of the course.
Lectures accompanied by projection of images, videos and commentary and discussion activities in the classroom, for which active participation of the students is required.
