LATIN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE - I

This course is included within the basic-courses of Humanities Degree, which is intended to provide students with a first-level knowledge of linguistic history and literary culture in the ancient Mediterranean area and in modern Europe from Antiquity until today. The primary purpose of this course is to make students aware of the tools needed in approaching original Latin texts, from a historical, linguistic, literary, stylistic point of view. The course is intended to make students acquainted with extensive selections from early, classic, imperial, late Latin literature, with readings and discussions on the evolution and development of Latin prose and poetry.
This course provides the preliminary 12 CFU within the scientific area L-FIL-LET/04; only after successfully passing the FT0435 exam, students can take any other Latin course. The course FT0435 can be taken both in the first semester (Prof. Luca Mondin, Prof. Paolo Mastandrea) and in the second semester (Prof. Antonio Pistellato).

Students will be aware of the historical development of the Latin language, from the pre-documentary period to early Middle Ages; at the end of the course they will have acquired a solid grasp on Latin literary history, from archaic Latin to the late imperial period, and an increased familiarity with the main tools for ancient textual analysis.
Participants will improve their knowledge of the main lines of Latin language and literature history. In the meantime, they will develop a comprehensive command as regards features of style, genre, and cultural context. Furthermore, they will be able to relate linguistic and literary phenomena of the Italian language to their Latin origin.

This course consists of reading and analysis of Latin literary texts, both prose and poetry: at least a basic knowledge of Latin is thus required. All students who want to take this exam must take and successfully pass the Latin 1 test in advance.

This course is intended to introduce students to the history of Latin language and literature. They will be offered a selection of original texts from Latin prose and poetry, from archaic Latin to the late imperial period, with special attention to different genres, authors and works.
The course focuses on a variety of topics: the development of the Latin language along the centuries; specificity of Latin, especially compared to Italian; intertextuality and genre features, dynamic effects of social and political contexts.

Exam programme is the same for attending and "non-attending" students. However, students are strongly recommended to attend the course.

Written exam (length: 120 minutes). 10 questions concerning topics covered in the course: history of Latin language and literature from the pre-documentary period to the early Middle Ages; the main features of classical Latin grammar and linguistic system and its development towards Italian and other Neo-Latin languages. Each question is assigned a mark: 7 “open” questions (up to mark 3 each), 2 “close-ended” questions (up to mark 1 each); the last question includes a sample of translation and commentary of a Latin text chosen from those read by the teacher during the course. Dual class sessions (regular and live streaming via Zoom), with translations of Latin texts and discussions on the evolution and development of Latin language and literature.
