GEOGRAPHY II

The course is included among the basic courses of the Bachelor's degree in Literature and in History and it is characterized by objectives and teaching methods consistent with the Geography I course (Surnames M-Z)
Nowadays tourism is a pervasive phenomenon, which can be interpreted from the perspective of Human and Social Sciences. The course aims at providing knowledge and interpretative tools useful to comprehend tourism as a geo-historical phenomenon. Besides, it aims at reflecting on the socio-spatial behavior of tourist actors and on their geo-literary transpositions.

1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1 Use of the geographical terminology related to tourism
1.2 Knowledge of the historical phases, the evolutive models and the contemporary impacts of travel and tourism practices


2. Applying knowledge and analyzing:
2.1 Being able to use the above mentioned tools to interpret the economic and socio-territorial dynamics of tourism mobility and tourism development at different geographical scales

2.2 Recognizing the tourist development dynamics (past or present) and the related social and environmental problems

2.3 Critical reading of contemporary odeporic literature (novels and travel diaries)

3. Ability to judge:
3.1 Evaluating, case by case, the economic, environmental and socio-cultural factors that concur to tourist sustainability (or unsustainability)

4. Communication skills:
4.1 Writing in a logic, coherent and synthetic style, in order to expose the knowledge gained
4.2 Use of an appropiate semantic and linguistic register

For students taking the exam for 12 credit it is compulsory to have approved the exam of Geography I (Surnames M-Z).

During the course some key concepts of Tourism Geography will be approached, such as the definitions and the liminal forms of tourism, the relations between tourism and mobility, the phases of tourism history, the impacts of tourism, the concepts of sustainable and responsible tourism. Specific examples and case studies will be provided.

Written exam with open questions targeted at the measurement of the ability to apply knowledge and understanding and the ability to judge. For students attending classes exam questions will be on lesson’s notes and on the specified textbooks; for non-attending students questions will be on the specified textbooks. The exams lasts 90 minutes (2 academic hours). To be confirmed.

Lectures with discussion and seminars (depending on COVID 19 crisis).
