The course is a basic activity for the Bachelor’s Degree in Lettere and Storia. As such, it aims to offer a reference frame on some approaches, concepts and topics of human geography. Objective of the course: providing some tools to know and interpret the territorial dynamics and anthropogenic transformation of nature, as well as the related environmental problems; presenting some of the major topics and problems of the contemporary cultural geography.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1 Acquiring the basic concepts of human geography
1.2 Knowledge of the classical schools of thought in human geography
1.3. Understanding the importance of the evolutive relation between nature and human societies
1.4 Knowing some topics of the contemporary cultural geography

2. Applying knowledge and analyzing:
2.1 Being able to use the above-mentioned concepts to interpret today’s world
2.1. Acquiring consciousness of one’s lived space and everyday landscape, as well as of the variety of landscapes, also as cultural heritage
2.3. Recognizing environmental and landscape risk and/or degradation

3. Ability to judge:
3.1 Recognizing the geo-historical evolution of landscapes; individuate contemporary dynamics and their impacts on landscape
3.2 Evaluating environmental impacts in the light of sustainability
3.3 Let emerge socio-cultural and political implications of spaces and places

4. Communication skills:
4.1 Writing in a logic, coherent and synthetic style, in order to expose the knowledge gained
4.2 Use of an appropriate semantic and linguistic register
General knowledge of the Italian landscape and territory. Ability to read basic cartography.
The course will provide some elements useful to narrow approaches, key concepts and objects of classic and contemporary human geography and cultural geography. The focus is especially brought on environment, space, place, territory and landscape, also in a geocultural sense. Case studies: wetland and land reclamation areas, islands.
Please note that the course includes a difference between students attending or non-attending the lessons.

Written exam with open questions targeted at the measurement of knowledge, the ability to apply knowledge and understanding and the ability to judge. For students attending classes, the exam questions will be on lesson’s notes and on the 2 specified textbooks. For not attending students, questions will be on the 3 specified textbooks. The exams lasts 90 minutes (2 academic hours). Exam procedure to be confirmed.

Lectures with discussion and seminars (depending on COVID 19 crisis).
Attending lessons is highly recommended.
