GREEK PALAEOGRAPHY

The course of Greek Palaeography offers to the students of “History” and “Humanities” the essential training for reading Greek manuscripts and documents, and for using and analysing historical and literary sources in their original form.

By the end of the ONLINE module, the students
• Will have a sound knowledge of Greek Palaeography (in particular minuscule bookhands and a general overview of the development of Greek handwriting)
• Will be able to select and apply sources and techniques required for the analysis of Greek manuscripts
• Will be able to read and transcribe from manuscripts

Knowledge of classical Greek.

This is an e-learning module and can be followed only on the MOODLE platform. The course is divided in two parts: 1) introduction to the History of Greek handwriting from antiquity to the first printed books, 2) practical training (reading and transcribing manuscripts).

FIRST WEEK
1. Introduction to Greek Paleography
2. Brief introduction to codicology
3. Majuscule book scripts

SECOND WEEK
4. Minuscule book scripts (9th-10th c.)
5. Minuscule book scripts (up to 10th c.)
6. Minuscule book scripts (“Bouletée” and “Perlschrift”)

THIRD WEEK
7. Writing Styles in the Provinces (10th-12th c.)
8. Writing Styles in the Provinces (10th-12th c.)
9. Continuation and gradual dissolution of the “Perlschrift” canon

FOURTH WEEK
10. Continuation and gradual dissolution of the “Perlschrift” canon
11. Writing Styles in the Provinces (12th-14th c.)
12. The 14th century

FIFTH WEEK
13. 15th-16th centuries
14. Ornamentation of Greek Manuscripts
15. Final Revision

This is an e-learning course, it is divided into 5 weeks, each week contains 3 teaching units; for each teaching unit, a short transcription from a manuscript must be submitted (upload).
Final exam: The written exam consists of 3 diplomatic transcriptions of 3 examples of writings from different periods (70% of the final grade), followed by dating (15% of the final grade) and a brief comment on the characteristics of the writing ( 15% of the final grade).
Duration of the written test: 3 hours.

E-learning module: students are reminded that the course of Greek Paleography for the BA degree is offered exclusively on-line. The course is organized lasts 5 weeks, each week 3 teaching units are presented. The units will be progressively accessible from the MOODLE platform; access to the units allows students to participate in the forum and to take the final tests of each unit.
Weekly tests and homework are COMPULSORY. The final exam is written and must be taken at Ca' Foscari.
