LABORATORY of ARCHAEOBOTANY(2 CFU) - didactic activity of the ARCHAEOLOGICAL LABORATORY SP. - is part of the training and guidance internships for the archaeological orientation of the Master’s degree in Ancient Civilisations: Literature, History and Archaeology.
The course aims to provide the basilar methods to study plant remains (charcoal woods, seeds, fruits, etc.) from archaeological excavations, in order to understand the environment and agricultural practices in the past.
1. Knowledge and comprehension
- knowing main methodologies of collection and documentation of archaeobotanical remains.
- knowing terminology of systematic botany.
- Taxonomic identification of wood and of carpological remains; statistical methodologies to understand relationshio man-environment.
2. Ability to apply knowledges and understanding.
- to be able to apply methodology and knowledge on archaeobotanical samples.
No prior knowledge is required.
Subject definition and terminology; history of archaeobotany; Anthracology: wood anatomy for identification charcoal and collection methods; Carpology: anatomy of seeds and fruits and collection methods; Palinology: description of pollen and spores; current flora and vegetation as sources for environmental history.

The assesment of learning consists of a written test aimed to verify the understanding of the topics presented in class. The teacher reserves the right to change the test mode based on the evolution of the Covid-19 emergency.
The course will be divided into Theoretical lessons with projections of Power Point presentations and in a practical part.
