Translation of the first chapters of the Bhagavadgita in order to test one's knowledge of Sanskrit grammar.
This is one of the core courses within the Indian Subcontinent curriculum of the Corso di Laurea in "Lingue, Culture e Società dell'Asia e dell'Africa Mediterranea".
Learning how to translate a Sanskrit text. The translation of the first chapters of the Bhagavadgita.
1. Knowledge and comprehension
To complete the knowledge of the grammatical structures of the Sanskrit language.
To know and comprehend the functioning of the grammatical structures of the Sanskrit language (intermediate level).
2. Ability to apply the acquired knowledge and comprehension
To be able to identify the different grammatical categories and their properties.
To demonstrate a general understanding of the grammatical structures of the Sanskrit language.
To be able to describe the constructions and the grammatical phenomena studied in class by using the appropriate terminology and the instruments of syntactic analysis.
A knowledge of elementary Sanskrit.
We will analyze and translate the Sanskrit text word by word.
We will read and analyze the Bhagavadgita thoroughly, starting with its first chapter.
In each class we shall read and analyze approximately ten stanzas.
The critical edition of the Bhagavadgita will be handed out by the teacher.
The student will be asked to read and translate the Bhagavadgita verses studied in class. We shall compare and contrast the different translations of the text.
The final exam will be exclusively oral.
