The course gives lectures on the modern and contemporary histories of East Asia, including Japan. Although it mainly focuses on East Asia from the 19th century to the end of the 20th century, it also looks at South Asia, North Asia etc. The lectures also pay attention to "global connections" that have made Asian histories. The lessons on "global Asian history" aim to offer basic historical knowledge on Asia for understanding the contemporary.

- to know and understand the modern and contemporary history of Asia, including Japan

- to use the knowledge of Asian history and global perspective in the research

- to exercise judgment within a global and historical perspective

- to write a research essay by using the historical knowledge and global perspective
It is recommended that students possess an intermediate level of the Japanese language (Level N3 JLPT) to integrate and deepen issues presented during the course. Moreover, students should have already a good knowledge of modern and contemporary Japanese history.
The course lectures on the history of Asia according to the following five periods:

-Before the 18th century
-18th century - First Sino-Japanese War
-After the Sino-Japanese War - World War II
-After World War II - Vietnam War 1975
-After the Vietnam War - the end of the 20th century

A written exam will be given to test knowledge of Asian history as covered in class.

NON ATTENDING: The exam program will be the same as the attending students.
Frontal lessons in Japanese.

Attendance and participation during classes will not be evaluated but are encouraged.
