Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The course corresponds to 12 CFU and it consists of 30h teacher + 120 h exercises. The students are also expected to dedicate a significant amount of time to single or group work on texts.
The course, as a whole, aims to develop translating skills of literary texts as well as original sources.
The aims of the course are the following ones:
1- Acquire knowledge and understanding of the Japanese modern literature of "Kaidan"(怪談), as well as the cultural features which characterize it.
2. Apply their language skills to understand to solve translating issues.
3- Acquire the ability to collect and interface Japanese sources and re-elaborate them in Italian.
4- Acclimate the student to short expositions of seminar nature.
Provide the student with the methodological toolkit to conduct their research facing Japanese sources in view of the completion of the Master's Thesis.
Expected learning outcomes
1- Know how to read and understand advanced-level texts in Japanese.
2- Know "Kaidan" literature and its thematics.
2- Apply linguistic and cultural skills to translate texts and solve translation issues.
3- Make connections between the texts read in class e re-elaborate them as training for the completion of the Master's Thesis.
The expected level at the end of the course is C1 (CEFR).

Contents

Professor Lo Cigno's 30h will consist of the following activities:
1- Presentation of the history and theory of "Kaidan" starting from the analysis of the figure of "Kaii" (怪異). It will be also provided a brief analysis of the main contemporary authors.
2- Reading of journals, articles, and novels.
3- Comments and reviews of the contents of the texts and of the translations produced by the students.

The novels will be discussed and chosen together during the first lesson.
Assessment methods
Regarding Dr. Lo Cigno's part of the course, both attending and non-attending students will have to sit a written test. It will consist of a translation of a text not read in class supported by the use of a dictionary (electronic dictionaries are allowed, but applications for smartphones/tablets are prohibited).
Teaching methods
Traditional activities will be coordinated with weekly in-class assignments (translation and discussion of translation choices). It is highly recommended that students bring their laptops/tablets with suitable writing devices to class.
Students will be required to complete weekly tasks (individual or group work) such as translation and presentation.
