The course will discuss theory and practice of migration, especially in the Mediterranean context, from a multidisciplinary perspective. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to the main theories of migration and to the history of migration in the Mediterranean, also through the study of specific cases. Particular attention will be given to the question of minors migrants and to the issue of forced migration and to the figure of the "refugee". The course will discuss the historical origins of the concept and the theoretical discuss that has taken place over it. The course will also include methodological sessions, aimed to provide students with the tools necessary to pursue independent research in this field.
By the end of the course, students will be able to show a sound understanding of
- the main theories of migration
- the historical roots of the notion of refugee and the way in which this has changed through time

They will also be able to
- analyse current debates on migration
- critically apprehend theoretical discussions on the treatment of refugees
- critically analyse specific case studies related to migration and displacement
- propose suitable topics for research in this field.
Different profiles will be considered by the class conductor, in accordance with the criteria followed for MIM admissions. Good knowledge of English and French is essential.
The main themes envisaged are:
1. Theory and practice of migration
2. The refugee in history
3. The refugee in theoretical debate, from Arendt to Agamben
4. Minors migrants: thinking about the child and its protection
Reference texts will be indicated by the class conductors and the material necessary to the preparation of the exam will be provided throughout the course.
Learning activities include both oral and written assignments, during the course, and final exam.
The course adopts a blended modality and includes both in-class teaching and online activities. The teaching approach adopted will encourage students' active participation to classroom activities, also through the use of group work and presentations, with the overall goal of helping students to develop an independent approach to learning and research.
