The teaching falls within the related / supplementary training activities of the three-year degree course in Chemistry and Sustainable Technologies. The course allows the student to acquire knowledge and understanding of topics related to the study of catalytic systems and the use of such systems in industrial technology. The student will learn about various examples of catalyst preparation in industry. The student will be able to face an application / industrial / technological problem in its various articulations and learn a coherent use of the current technical-scientific language.
The main objective will be to understand the role of catalysis in the preparation of the various chemical specialties. In particular, i) the use of logical and deductive reasoning in solving these problems will be stimulated, an approach of fundamental importance for dealing with any scientific problem; ii) developed the ability to formulate scientific concepts and reasoning in a formal way; Experts from industry or academia will be invited to give seminars on course topics.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
a) of the basic concepts of catalysis.

c) characterization of catalytic systems such as gas adsorption techniques (physisorption, chemisorption), thermoanalytical techniques (TPR, TPO, TPD), thermogravimetric techniques (TG, DTA, DSC), structured techniques
d) Photocatalysis
e) Examples of sustainable processes

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
a) Knowing how to exploit the knowledge learned in class to solve a logical-deductive reasoning of some problems related to catalysis.
b) Knowing how to do a bibliographic research

3. Ability to judge
Knowing how to evaluate the effectiveness of different formulation approaches

4. Communication skills
a) Knowing how to formulate appropriate questions during lessons
b) Knowing how to use an appropriate lexicon and the appropriate technical-scientific symbology to communicate learning.

5. Learning skills
a) Knowing how to be adequately autonomous in carrying out bibliographic research.
b) Knowing how to take notes appropriately.
Basic knowledge of chemistry,
The basic concepts on catalysis will be given.
An overview of the methods normally assigned in the synthesis of a heterogeneous catalyst and of photocatalysts such as (precipitation, impregnation, ion exchange, precipitation deposition, synthesis model, sol-gel synthesis, synthesis with protective agents, etc.) will be presented.
Some characterization techniques will be presented such as (gas adsorption analysis,, thermoanalytical, and thermogravimetric techniques, chromatographic techniques)
Examples of the use of some catalytic systems will be presented and it will be shown how the synthetic procedure influences the property of the catalyst and therefore its performance. Examples of innovative and sustainable processes

Verification of learning takes place through an oral test. During the oral exam, the student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics developed during the course and of knowing how to present them in a formal way. The oral exam consists of a series of questions regarding the program carried out. The oral test lasts between 30 and 45 minutes due to the clarity and consistency of the answers to the questions asked.

The following are required: active participation in the lessons and obviously knowledge of the topics covered during the course.
Teaching is organized in classroom lectures. In the "moodle" platform of the University, educational material will be available (pdf of presentations projected in the classroom).
