The second module of the course of Development Economics and International Trade aims to introduce the student to the main concepts and models of the international economy, showing their usefulness for understanding the logic of trade and of the global production. The main goal is to give students awareness on the reasons and limits of international economic integration, showing the different forms in which this integration develops in contemporary economies: trade, capital flows, international production, global value chains, migratory processes, knowledge networks. The course will be alternated with theoretical lessons and in-depth application domains, with particular attention to the activities carried out by the export manager and even meeting companies operating in international markets.
1) Knowledge and understanding:
- Learn the basic concepts of international economics and the related reference terminology
- Know the main analysis models of the international trade
- Know critically the main tools of the trade policy and how they affects international economy
- Get skill in use data relating international economy.
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: use the concepts learned to interpret changes and opportunities in international markets, advantages and costs of commercial policies, the logic of global business strategies, the mobility of capital, people and knowledge.
3) Judgment skills: knowing how to formulate and argue interpretative hypotheses on the development of economic systems and the behavior of companies on international markets.
4) Communication skills: the student must be able to synthesize knowledges learned in effective and coherent modes.
Students must know the essential micro and macroeconomics concepts supplied in Economics and Political economy courses.
History of international economy and the stages of globalization
Absolute advantages and comparative advantages of international trade
Intra-industry trade, product differentiation and internal and external economies of scale
Rationale, benefits and costs of trade policies
Direct investment, multinational enterprise and global value chains
Economic complexity and product space in world trade
Economics and politics of migration processes
The student will get access to teaching materials in the form of slides, reports and papers on the Moodle platform.
As reference text, the student can choose between the following two:

Written examination, with multiple choice questions, one or more open questions and quantitative exercise.
During the lessons the active participation of the students and the individual contribution to the topics discussed in the classroom will be evaluated.
