The course of Portuguese and Brasilian Literature 2 MOD 2 is common to all the curricula available in the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Language, Civilisation and the Science of Language.
The course aims to provide a profound critical conscience about the Brazilian narrative and cultural history with specific attention to the indigenous issues.
1. Knowledge and understanding: to highlight the space that indigenous people occupy in the Brazilian collective imagination, through the analysis of passages from works from colonial literature to contemporary literature. Promote the knowledge of new indigenous voices, such as those of Kaká Werá, Daniel Munduruku, Eliane Potiguara and others, to stimulate empathy and sensitivity towards different cultures.

2. Applied knowledge and understanding: to analise and interpret two works by Darcy Ribeiro, one of the most recognised Brazilian intellectuals, both in Brazil and abroad - Maíra and Brazil. The epic of a Nation People - in such a way that interdisciplinary knowledge can be expanded.

3. Autonomy of judgement ability: ability to acquire and apply adequate critical tools in the analysis of the narrative texts indicated, on a thematic and stylistic-formal level, also putting them in relation to the context.

4. Communicative skills: to understand the presentation of an academic discourse: to express concepts with clarity and terminological precision; such as, for example, being able to distinguish Indianism from indigenism in the context of the Brazilian literary system.

5. Ability to learn: learning how to recognise the type of text and formulate hypotheses to analysis; learning how to establish appropriate links between the facts and materials examined and the ideas and context in which they are expressed.
Basic knowledge of American history and culture.
The course will be developed in three parts; a first dedicated to indigenous representations that goes from the letter of "discovery" ("achamento") of Brazil (by Pero Vaz de Caminha) to the cultural cannibalism of Oswald de Andrade; a second will be dedicated to the works of Darcy Ribeiro, and a third will be dedicated to listening to the new contemporary indigenous voices. In the first segment, an in-depth study will be dedicated to particular issues regarding myths, stereotypes, the construction of national identity and indigenous images as a starting point for the desire for cultural autonomy. In the second segment, part of the work of Darcy Ribeiro will be read and analysed, ethically and politically committed to the indigenous question. Known as a defender of the indigenous people, his struggle was also expressed through his novels and his work was highly celebrated in the Italian cultural system, in particular, between the seventies and nineties of the past century, because it promoted a new collective imagination of Latin American modernity. Finally, the last part of the course invites students to listen to the contemporary indigenous voices and read their works to reflect on Brazilian society.
The course will begin with the reading and analysis of the first chapters of The Epic of a People Nation, and then, in flashbacks, the first part will be developed.
