The course is part of the characteristic courses common to the degree course in Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage and Activities; it is addressed in particular to students of the archaeological and historical-artistic curricula.
The course aims to deepen the history of the conservation and restoration of works of art through the history of techniques and theoretical elaborations. After a brief introduction on general concepts and specific terminology, the course includes a series of lessons on the history of restoration from the fifteenth century to today, through the analysis of the changes that have occurred in the theoretical and technical choices.
At the end of the lessons the students will have to know the main figures who have covered the activity of restorers in Italy and at the same time be able to understand the main problems related to the conservation and restoration of the heritage. The study of the practical and theoretical aspects of restoration will be analyzed in a historical key, in order to understand the critical implications that, in the past as today, imply every restoration intervention.
A basic knowledge of art history and artistic techniques is recommended.
Problems related to the conservation and restoration of painting and sculpture will be addressed, dealing with the restoration of monuments only for those periods in which this activity was particularly significant for the more general theory of restoration. Among other topics will be illustrated in a particular way: the restoration in Vasari; Maratta, Bernini, Algardi and Boselli as restorers; the theoretical debate between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (Edwards, Winckelmann, Cavaceppi, Canova); the restoration manuals by Secco Suardo and Forni; the debate on the restoration of architecture at the end of the 19th century (Viollet le Duc, Brito, Ruskin); Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle and the restorers associated with him; the theory of Cesare Brandi and the contemporary debate.
Specific space will be dedicated to the theory of Cesare Brandi and the most recent problems relating to the restoration and conservation of works of art, up to today's debate on the professionalism of the restorer.

Even non-attending students are strongly advised to consult the powerpoints published among the teaching materials.
The exam takes place through a written test with open questions on the topics covered during the course and exposed in the powerpoints available among the teaching materials.
The currently authorized delivery method is that of lectures, but dialogic, in dual mode. Additional materials (sources, bibliography, videos, PowerPoint presentations used during the lessons) will be provided through the moodle platform (http://moodle.unive.it ).
