This is one of the "Core educational activities"(B) of the Bachelor's Degree Programme in "Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts”, curriculum in archaeology.
It is conceived as an introduction to the archaeology that deals with the study of the Mediterranean and of the Middle East in the long Islamic period, between the 7th and the 15th centuries. Students will acquire a basic knowledge of the main streams of research the discipline of Islamic archaeology has addressed so far and he/she will develop specific analytical and critical skills in relation to the various themes.
The student will acquire knowledge and skills that will allow him/her to understand key stages of the complex cultural, social and economic processes that characterize the Mediterranean and the Middle-East regions in the long Islamic period, on the basis of the archaeological record. He/she will develop specific skills to critically analyse interpretative models offered by the history of studies.
The course does not require specific competences.
Through the analysis of selected case-studies, this course will discuss the main streams of research developed by Islamic archaeology: the transition from Late Antiquity; urban settlements; landscape and resource management; the production; the circulation of artifacts in the Mediterranean.
The course may also include lectures on specific subjects offered by external experts.

Additional reading will be provided for specific themes.
At the oral examination the student will be required to illustrate the topics treated in the lectures, with the help of images.
A complete list of the topics on which the exam questions will be focused will be published upon completion of the course.
Frontal lessons will be illustrated with images; ppts of each lecture will be made available on the MOODLE e-learning platform.
