Assessment methods
All attending students are required to take part in the class activities and in individual and group activities. All such activities are mandatory for attending students and will be weighted as follows in the computation of the grade:
• written exam, worth 60% of the grade - you must pass this part;
• individual activity 10% - it consists of quizzes available on Moodle for a limited amount of time;
• group activity 30% - it consists of the group analysis of a real business case.
Non-attending students are exempt from the individual and group activities and must pass an oral exam instead, provided they pass the written exam. Non-attending students must agree their status with me and be cleared by me to follow the alternative course modality before week 3 of the course. All students that do not complete either the individual or the group activities by the deadline will be automatically considered non-attending students and will have to take the oral exam to complement their grade.
The written exam is made up of 13 multiple-choice questions and 1 open-ended question. We will discuss some example questions during the course to familiarize you with the type of questions you will face in the exam. Each multiple-choice question is worth 2 points, while the open-ended question is worth up to 4 points mapping into your partial grade on the usual 0-30 scale.
During the exam, it is not possible to use notes, books, slides or any other material, cell phones or other devices. The exam verifies the general knowledge of the students over the course topics. To pass the student needs to have at least 18 points. In the case of decimals, the grade will be rounded up or down to the nearest grade. The exam can be taken during the formal exam dates only.
The individual activity is composed of 5 quizzes available through Moodle. Please refer to the Moodle page of the course for more information about grading for this part.
The analysis of a real business case, chosen by the instructor and randomly assigned, needs to be structured as a written report (the exact structure will be discussed in class). The case analysis is a group project, where groups can have a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 individuals. Once the report is handed in, it cannot be changed/improved in any ways. The report will be graded on a the usual scale, where passing grades are 18-30. The maximum possible grade awarded to the report is 30/30.
The final grade will be the average of all the required activities, provided that the written exam grade is at least equal to 18/30. The weighted average of the final grade uses the weights listed above. The student passes the exam if the average grade is greater or equal to 18.
The distinction will be awarded at the discretion of the instructor.
