THE RISE AND FALL OF A GREAT

The course aims at providing students with main information about the history of Venice from the Later Middle Ages until her fall. The analysis of the main social, economic and political structures of Venice will offer a useful framework both to students interested in the history of the city in which they live and study and to those who wish to widen their knowledge of the past.

Knowing the main events of Venetian history;
Understanding the current city in the light of its past;
Understanding the causes of the rise and decline of a political and economic system

No prerequisite is requested

During the course, which will be developed both in classroom and in significant historical sites (Accademia, Arsenal, State Archives), events concerning the city and the Venetian state from the formation of the colonial dominion until the end of the Republic in 1797 will be examined. Particular attention will be paid to political-institutional, economic and social aspects.
