The target of this course is to give the students a remind of some basic
knowledge, refreshing preparatory schools contents in chemistry and
making them able to follow profitably the following General Chemistry
and Lab. lectures and numerical exercises.
The expected results in learning are those of establishing a common ground
of knowledge for students coming fron different kind of schools, at
least on a fundamental set of points (see infra).
No previous knowledge is required other then those given at preparatory schools level.
Some concepts on atom and its structure.
Chemical elements and Periodic Table.
Compounds and formulas.
The mole concept.
Oxidation states.
Inorganic compounds nomenclature: oxygenated and hydrogenated compounds.
Ion nomenclature: cations and anions.
Salt nomenclature.
Acids and bases and their nomenclature.
Reaction balancing; redox reaction.
An outline on solids, liquids and gases, phase transitions and the kinetic theory. Intermolecular forces, hydrogen bonds.
Any General Chemistry text used in preparatory schools.
Being an introductory course, no final test is scheduled.
Lectures with the support of Power-Point slides for images/graphics etc.
