HISTORY OF MODERN ART II

This course is one of the core educational activities of the Master's Degree in History of Arts and Conservation of Artistic Heritage. It aims to provide students with critical tools for a deep knowledge of Renaissance Venetian painting, with a focus on the narrative cycles for the Scuole (XVth-XVIth centuries), from Carpaccio to Tintoretto.

Knowledge and understanding : deep knwoledge of Venetian Renaissance narrative painting for the Scuole Grandi (XV-XVIth centuries), with a particular interest in social and historical context and religius debates.
Ability to employ knowledge and understanding : students will be able to master the main contents, concepts and terms of the course ; elaboration of personal and critical speech supporting by the tools provided by the teacher.
Capacity of judgment : students will be able to develop a critical approach on the different contents of the course and to provide a personal and informed opinion.
Communicative skills : students will be able to discuss specific subjects, respecting Italian syntax and enjoying the dialogue with teacher and other students.
Understanding skills : students’ understanding skills will be stimulate thanks to the seminar approach and inclusive discussions animated by teacher, academic scholars and other students.

A good knowledge of the art history (Early Modern period) is recommended.

Painting « istorie » in Renaissance Venice from Carpaccio to Tintoretto
This course focuses on Venetian Renaissance painting (XV-XVIth centuries), with a particular attention to narrative painting for the Scuole (Carpaccio, Tiziano, Paris Bordon, Tintoretto, etc.). Through a deep investigation of historical and social context, religious debate, relationship between painting and sources and between artists and patrons, we will discuss the complexe and fascinating topic of pictorial invention.

The oral exam will focus on the course and bibliography contents but also on a straight personal experience of works of art.

The course is organised in lectures with ppt, visits to museums, exhibitions and monuments and seminars to increase some specific subjects.

Italian

The attendance at this course is strongly recommended. Students who could not participate have to plan the exam's program together with the professor. Bibliography will be confirmed at the beginning of the course.
