Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The general objectives of the course are to: 1) develop language reflection skills and 2) provide basic methodological tools for linguistic analysis and for interlingual comparison. Particular attention is devoted to lexical, syntactic and textual aspects.
Expected learning outcomes
The students know the linguistic terminology and the specialized lexicon of the discipline.
The students know and understand the recent acquisitions of linguistic theories regarding the Portuguese language.
The students know and understand the significant interlinguistic variations between the Portuguese and the Italian grammatical system.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding:
The students are able to use the analysis tools of formal linguistics to describe and understand aspects of Portuguese syntax.
The students know how to identify and reflect on the interlinguistic variations between the syntax of Portuguese and the syntax of Italian.
The students know how to properly use linguistic terminology in the application of acquired knowledge, for example in the analysis of new data or in the teaching of Portuguese.
The students know how to apply the acquired knowledge to obtain new linguistic data.
The students are able to solve problems of linguistic analysis of some complexity.
3. Making judgments:
The students are able to present a hypothesis on data from the Portuguese.
The students are able to produce examples of Portuguese to support or refute a syntactic hypothesis.
4. Communication skills:
The students express in writing the hypotheses and linguistic aspects covered during the course using the specific Portuguese terminology of linguistic studies.
The students are able to expose the topics covered during the course with terminological properties.
The students are able, during the lessons, to interact with peers and with the teacher in a critical and proper way.
5. Learning skills:
The students are able to develop critical reasoning in linguistics.
The students are able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to a more or less expert audience in Portuguese.
The students are able to research and select adequate bibliographic sources to study the linguistic phenomena of Portuguese.
The students are able to develop the skills acquired to undertake higher studies.

Assessment methods
During the written test, the use of books, notes, electronic media is not allowed.
To pass the exam, a short written paper (5-10 pp.) on a topic discussed in the course is also required.

Lessons are held in Portuguese.
