The course is part of the characteristic activities of the Iberian Studies area of the Master's Degree in European American and Postcolonial Languages and Literatures, and it aims to think about the Luso-Brazilian world from a historical and cultural perspective, focusing on the cultural processes that led to the construction, reformulation and transformation of national identities and relationships within the Lusophone space up to the present day.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
Knowing research methodologies in the field of history and cultural history in the Lusophone context.
Knowing and framing the origins and dynamics of the development of Portuguese diversity and its extracontinental colonial transfers, from the age of geographical discoveries to the processes of decolonization, up to the present.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding:
Knowing how to articulate a coherent historical-cultural framework of events at the origin of the development of the contemporary Portuguese-speaking world, distinguish the main factors of this historical-cultural development.
Knowing how to start critical insights independently on specific topics.
3. Making judgments:
Being able to make critical judgments based on the topics covered during the course.
4. Communication skills:
Being able to present the topics covered during the course with critical and terminological accuracy.
Being able, during the lessons, to interact with peers and with the teacher in a critical and adequate way on the topics of the course.
5. Learning skills:
Being able to develop critical reasoning on the topics covered during the course.
Being able to search and select relevant bibliographic sources.
Basic knowledge of the history of Portugal and Brazil.
The course will provide the critical tools to think and understand the Luso-Brazilian world from a historical and cultural perspective. In particular, the focus will lie on the cultural processes that led to the construction, reformulation and transformation of national identities and relationships within the Lusophone space to the present day.

Oral exam that aims at verifying the degree of achievement of the expected results in an integrated way. A short written paper (5-10 pp.), which critically explores a topic discussed in the course, is also required.
Lectures, seminars, commented reading of texts and documents, commented vision of audiovisual materials.
