Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
This course introduces students to the core issues of human resource management, organization design and organization theory. Its primary purpose is to equip students with a critical appreciation of the central theoretical questions, themes, and debates in the literature. During this period of deep change managing Human Resources an Organization is becoming more and more important for any competitive company.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Human resources management is vital to the financial health and productivity of all organizations. This important function provides a crucial link between management and employees.
In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of human resources management. Begin by acquiring an in-depth understanding of the charter and mission of human resources within an organization. In particular, this course aims to develop an understanding of the basic issues regarding managing people in innovative and international companies (i.e. multinational enterprises and firms with an international workforce).
The course will provide the analytical tools necessary to analyse people management issues in organizations. The course will develop the competences and knowledge about policies and tools required to deal with people management issues. Main people management practices will be analysed: staffing practices, employee’s development and competences, performance management and compensation and incentive systems, focusing on how to foster people motivation and organizational innovation.
Finally, the course will underline how managing Human Resources is not a standardised methodology but an approach that:
- starts from the company Strategy and Culture,
- considers key elements as, for examples, individual needs, diversity, personal culture and aspiration,
for:
- setting up and continuosly implement processes, policies, procedures, teams and working methods,
- motivating and rewarding people,
- influencing the company growth and health,
all considering the ethic and sustainability guidelines.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1) understand the features and elements of an HRM in an organization, as well as the minimum basic skills that any manager could have for managing his or her team;
2) examine the process of workforce planning and people recruitment, selection and induction;
3) explore the critical role and challenges of employee development and competencies;
4) understanding how important is the Organization alignment with company Strategy and Culture ;
5) be aware of the different compensation and rewards systems;
6) have a big picture of how Human Resources theory are applied in business reality.
The teaching method used in this course will be interactive and experiential, with analyses, discussions and managerial business stories.
Pre-requirements
Students are expected to have basic knowledge of the topics Organization Design course.

Students enrolled (immatricolati) in the undergraduate course of Economics and Management in 2019/2020 and 20118/2019: Principles of management and international accounting

Assessment methods
1. A multiple-choice question test will be used to assess students’ learning (0 to 28 points)
2. A two open questions part (0 to 2 points)
FINAL EXAM GRADE
Written exam (multiple-choice) 0-30 points.
Group work (voluntary) 0-2 points
Total ex. 30+1=30 with merit; or 25+2=27

Hence, the course will be highly interactive and experiential.

Class discussion is one of the primary ways that students will learn about Human Resources Management. Regular attendance (online also) is warmly suggested. Slides do not have to be intended as substitutes to coming to class.

Further information
Students who attend the course can voluntary choose to do a workgroup (max group members equal to 5). It will be graded from 0 to 2 points to be added to the final exam grade. The points of the workgroup will only be valid for the January 2021 exam sessions. More instructions about the workgroup will be given in class.
