The course is taylored for any of the curricula of the degree in Management, and it is addressed to those students who are interested in a deeper understanding of the problems and opportunities of managing nonprofit organizations.
The course aims at providing an understanding of organizational and governance logics of nonprofit and third sector organizations. An approach is followed that privileges the analysis of context variables relevant to the change processes such organizations are stimulated to in this historical period
Basic knowledge of management and accounting for NPO
Third sector's boundaries and actors. Nonprofit and social economy organizations' distinctive features. Economic and social dimensions, and the value creation process. Social cooperatives as forms of innovative social enterprises. Institutional structure and organizational complexity of bank foundations. Strategic management. The control system. Culture, strategy and organizational design. Fund raising strategies and instruments. Human resource management. Governance and accountability: measuring and communicating performance

Case studies (will be communicated at the beginning of the course and they will be available through Moodle).
For both attending and non-attending students: WRITTEN EXAM (70% of final grade). 3 open-ended questions based on the textbook chapters and on the case studies discussed in class.
For attending students: CASE STUDIES presentation and discussion by groups during seminars (30% of final grade):
For non-attending students: ORAL EXAM (30% of final grade): during the oral exam, non-attending students will have to present one case study analysis of their choice, among the 4 cases of the seminars + will have to respond to theory questions on the program.
The course will alternate a theoretical approach (lectures) and an "active learning" approach (case study seminars and/or lab activities - such as interviews with NPO managers).
