Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The course offers its contents through the analysis both of the theory and of the business practices.
Expected learning outcomes
1) knowledge and understanding of the business areas of banking activity;
2) knowledge and understanding of the regulation that applies to the different areas of banking activity;
3) knowledge and understanding of the managerial dynamics of the banking activity;
4) knowledge and understanding of the principal characteristics of the corporate governance of banks;
5) knowledge and understanding of the risks characterising the activity of banks;
6) knowledge and understanding of the basics of financial statement analysis and performance measurements for banks.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
1) ability to identify the areas of activity and the models of service adopted by the different banking operators;
2) ability to analyse the different market policies of banks, also according to the regulatory constraints they are submitted;
3) ability to recognize the role of the organs and functions of the governance of banks, also according to the recent directive;
4) ability to detect the main risks to which different banking institutions are exposed;
5) ability to implement the financial statement analysis and performance measurements for banks.
3. Making Judgements:
1) ability to interpret critically the managerial decisions of the banks;
2) ability to compare and to analyse the decisions of different operators regarding the model of service adoption;
3) ability to evaluate the capital adequacy of banks according to the risks they are exposed to;
4) ability to interpret the information obtained by the financial statement analysis and the performance indicators.

- The bank activity: definition of bank and its main activities (bank funding, investments and services);
- The SBUs of banks: retail banking, private banking, corporate banking;
- The Banking Regulation: supervision and regulation of banks (capital adequacy and capital ratios, Basel agreements, risk containment, activity and affiliation restrictions);
- Bank governance and internal controls: risk management, internal audit and compliance;
- The balance sheet of banks: financial statements and performance indicators.

Assessment methods
The 12 CFU exam lasts 60 minutes.
Students will get an additional mark (1 or 2 points) on the final grade if participating in all learning activities during the course (case study analysis and discussion).
Teaching methods
During classroom hours there will be activities of case studies analysis and discussion, used to apply theoretical concepts to empirical cases.
