In the framework of the Degree Course in Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa, this teaching is aimed at offering a general overview of the history of the Near and Middle East, from the origin of Islam up today. It will go through the major historical events of the region, devoting particular attention to the most relevant cultural, socio-political and economic aspects, as well as it will enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge and analytical tools in order to better understand contemporaneity.
- Basic knowledge of major facts and dynamics of the history of the Near and Middle East from the emergence of Islam until today.
- Ability to interpret contemporary developments from a historical perspective
- Ability to critically analyze major political, social and economic dynamics of the history of the Near and Middle East
- Ability to report the acquired information in a clearly articulated way.
No prerequisites are required to attend the course.

The main phases of the contemporary history of Near and Middle East (1800-2011)
(vii) The age of modernization (1800 - 1920)
(viii) The age of colonialism and of notables (1920 - 1945)
(ix) The age of revolutions in the Arab World (1945 - 1979)
(x) The restructuring of the Arab World (1979 - 2011)
