This is one of the core courses within the "China" curriculum of the undergraduate course in "Lingue, Culture e Società dell'Asia e dell'Africa Mediterranea".
The course contributes to the attainment of the teaching goals of the Corso di Laurea in the area of language skills and includes also the more specific goals of the cultural and humanities areas.
The course aims at providing the fundamentals of classical Chinese through the reading and analysis of some passages of the Chinese literary tradition.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
a) The student knows the basic structures of the classical Chinese language.
b) The student knows the right tools to translate.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding:
a) The student is able to identify basic grammatical structures and consequently to translate correctly.
b) The student is able to identify the most appropriate tools to translate a particular text.
3. Making judgements:
a) The student is able to identify the most correct translation
Basic knowledge of the history and thought of pre-imperial China.
Basic knowledge of modern chinese.
To have passed the exam of the first part of the course (mod. 1).
Introduction to the study of classical chinese: grammar, reading and analysis of some excerpts from classical and pre-modern texts. All the text will be uploaded on moodle, please check it every week.

The course will be devoted to the analysis and translation of the texts. The students have to analyze and translate the texts regularly during the semester. They will present their own interpretation of the text during the lesson and discuss it.
Due to the difficulty of the discipline the constant attendance as well as the constant study is strongly recommended.
