The general aim is to consolidate the English language competences needed to achieve an operational competence of B2+ on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). The main focus is on providing the instruments to communicate effectively in the fields of international study and work, developing written and oral competences, production and interaction.

The expected learning outcomes are assessed in a structured exam at the end of the course.
Expected learning outcomes, with reference to the Dublin descriptors:
1) Knowledge and understanding of academic skills in the framework of a Masters degree that covers cutting-edge fields of study. In particular: political, cultural, social and economic events in a globalisation context, with special reference to the fields of international study and work.
2) Applying knowledge and understanding: use of language skills to produce written texts appropriate for academic and professional contexts. Spoken presentation and production.
3) Making judgments: ability to select and utilise reliable sources of information at an international level in English, e.g. internet sites dedicated to international study and work; news agencies etc; the ability to identify professional and academic strengths and weaknesses.
4) Communication skills: ability to communicate in English at the B2+/C1 level of the CEFR, developing both written and spoken skills and communicative interaction, in the fields of international study and work.
5) Learning skills: continue the consolidation of language competences in the fields of international study and work through the individual preparation of written and oral texts.
Language competencies at the B2+ level of the CEFR.
The main focus of the course is acquiring written and spoken skills in an international professional context in which English is a lingua franca. Particular attention will be given to the ability to identify and present transferable skills, education and qualifications, and work experience.

Students will have the opportunity to improve the preparation of their CV or résumé; cover letter for jobs or internships; Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement; formal communication; and e-mails. Interview skills will also be developed. We will work on short exercises aimed at developing the ability to synthesise information, to write with clarity, in addition to formal accuracy.
Teaching materials will be made available during the course.

The expected learning outcomes are assessed in an exam at the end of the course:
1. Written exam
a. writing of a professional document: CV, personal statement, cover letter.
b. writing of a short essay.

2. Oral exam
Simulated interview.

For regular attenders a continuous assessment option is available.
