The course sets out to provide knowledge of the main dimensions concerning sociology of health and health care.
In a micro sociological perspective, our attention will focus on the social construction of illness, on the doctor-patient relationship and on the patient’s experience of illness.
In a macro-sociological perspective, it intends to provide students with tools to understand the persistent health inequities in our society. Moreover, we provide knowledge on the determinants of health and risk factors.
The course will reflect on increasingly pervasive medicalization / pharmacologization processes.
In addition to health issues, we will provide knowledge on the evolution of the health system and in particular, on the principles and functioning of the Italian health system.
Finally, we will analyze policies to combat health inequities and access to and use of health services.
On the methodological level, the course will allow the acquisition of the tools necessary to correctly describe a health event in a population.

The final test to verify knowledge and skills acquisition takes place through 1 and a half hours’ written exam. This test consists of three questions, one of which can include an exercise on the epidemiological part of the course. Students have to demonstrate the understanding of the topics discussed and the material made available during the lessons or on moodle platform, as well as the ability to make links between topics. To pass the exam, students have to obtain a positive evaluation (> 18) in all three answers. The final grade is the average of the three grades. There is no possibility to take the exam orally.
Attending and non-attending students.
Students will be considered as Attending students if they frequent 75% or more lessons (23 hours of 30 hours). Presences in class will be collected to establish lessons participation.

During class, different types of teaching will be used: lectures, exercises, group works.
