Seminario di ricerca
Gaming houses and the new production of users
A cura di Attila Bruni, Università degli Studi di Trento

Abstract
Gaming represents one of the leading entertainment industries on a global scale. In its competitive form, it has given rise to the world of “esports”, whose cultural and economic value place it on par with other forms of both sporting and non-sporting entertainment. While media studies have so far approached these phenomena primarily from the perspective of users, in this presentation I will shift the focus to the industry side, concentrating on gaming houses—spaces established by major esports teams to train and enable competition among professional video game players.
Based on a systematic review of various materials (scientific literature, journalistic publications, videos, blogs, websites), I will highlight how gaming houses emerge as environments capable of producing and operationalizing the practices of competitive gaming through the arrangement and integration of diverse digital infrastructures, and architectural and social structures. Gaming houses thus constitute spaces of articulation for the gaming world and the esports industry, offering insights into the organizational strategies employed to “produce” users who are increasingly capable of constantly generating contents.
