Lived Religion and Magical Practices in the Catacombs

Monday 7 October, 2024
2:30–4:00pm

Abstract: A vital element of what we call “lived religion” is the unsanctioned, improvised practices of ordinary individuals. It can be hard to see instances of lived religion in the past, but Rome’s catacombs provide an interesting opportunity to see the efforts of ordinary individuals to call on protective spirits, predict the future, or even curse their enemies…if we know where to look!
