Working on human rights in an authoritarian context: some case studies

Aula 1B, Palazzo Moro

Avinash Kumar, Centre for Equity Studies

The talk will look not only at strategies that human rights groups in India deploy and their context-specific relevance, but also at a set of varied case studies (e.g. People’s Union of Civil Liberties, ANHAD, Centre for Equity Studies, and Krwaan e Mohabbat). These case studies, which consider the work of human rights defenders who are currently serving their time as political prisoners, exemplify the challenges that national and international organizations face.

Avinash Kumar got a PhD in Modern Indian History from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, and was a Charles Wallace Visiting Fellow at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London. He was Director of Policy, Research and Campaigns at OxFam India, Director of Program and Policy at WaterAid India, and Executive Director of Amnesty International India. Currently he is a Distinguished Fellow at Centre for Equity Studies, Delhi.
