Final exam

The final exam is a written thesis on a topic approved by your supervisor. The paper must have a preface in your chosen Oriental language (3000 characters for Chinese, 4000 for Japanese and Arabic).

Types of final paper

The final paper can be:

  • a critical and interdisciplinary investigation of specific aspects of the economic, legal and political culture, society or contemporary history of your area of specialisation;
  • a translation with a critical introduction and comments;
  • a terminology thesis (minimum 80 terms) with a critical introduction.

Credits earned with the final exam

For the China, Japan and Arab countries curricula the number of credits earned with the final exam is 24.

Final exam procedure

The final exam involves presenting and discussing your research or applied research work in front of a committee. Part of the exam will be conducted in the language chosen for the study programme, to demonstrate the required language skills.

Supervisor and Assisting Supervisor

The topic for the final exam needs to be approved by the supervisor.

The student should preferably choose a supervisor or advisor who is a faculty member of the LEISAAM master's degree programme or the Department of Economics. If the student wishes to ask a lecturer from a department other than the Department of Asian and North African Studies (DSAAM) to be their thesis supervisor, they must also have an advisor who is a member of the DSAAM faculty. This advisor will be responsible for discussing the language aspect of the thesis during the thesis defence. Any deviation from these guidelines must be approved by the teaching board of the course.

It is the role of the thesis advisor to communicate the name of the assistant supervisor to the Didactic Sector of the Department of Asian and North African Studies (lauree.campuslingue@unive.it)

  1. Consider the timing required: the MA thesis should be requested and agreed upon with the supervisor a year prior to the graduation session considered or at the beginning of the second year at the lastest.
  2. Before contacting a prospective supervisor, please check the document “Professors thesis profile sinological area [ITA]” attached.
  3. Send a formal request to the professor in an email, with the following information:
    • enrolled Master’s Degree
    • abstract (max. 300 words)
    • index/summary
    • bibliography (at least 4-5 titles)
    • considered graduation session
  4. The e-mail must be sent from the student’s institutional email address (matriculationnumber@stud.unive.it) with the following object: "Master’s thesis request" ("richiesta tesi magistrale").
  5. Wait for the professor’s answer to agree on a topic and work methodology.

Please remember that accepting or refusing a Master’s thesis is at the discretion of each professor.
