Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom is professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. Expert in modern Chinese history, he curated The Oxford illustrated history of modern China (Oup) and he is the author of Eight juxtapositions: China through imperfect analogies from Mark Twain to Manchukuo (Penguin, 2016).

On Tuesday October 1, a date that marked the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, Ca’ Foscari had the pleasure of hosting prof. Wasserstrom for a lecture titled "Mr. Science and Mr. Democracy in China from 1919 to 2019"

Radio Ca’ Foscari interviewed him to know more about present day China, in particular to understand how its millennials are growing up, surrounded by disturbing news of government spies infiltrating universities and student activism, the latter represented by the emblematic figure of Joshua Wong, a 22 year old from Hong Kong.
