Irina Bokova received the title of Honorary Fellow, which was granted to her back in 2012, from the hands of the Vice Rector of Ca' Foscari, Tiziana Lippiello "Thank you for this title, which is delivered to UNESCO through me - affirmed Bokova - a organisation that spends every day defending human dignity and feeding the spirit of dialogue".

Prior to her keynote address, entitled 'Fostering cultural diversity as a shared heritage to build peace', Irina Bokova recalled, with grief, the earthquakes that continue to affect central Italy.

On the 25th October 2012, The Academic Senate of Ca’ Foscari resolved to grant to Irina Bokova, General Director of U.N.E.S.C.O., the title of  "Ca' Foscari University Honorary Fellow" for:

- Strengthening the role of U.N.E.S.C.O. as the lead organization and international leader in the promotion of peace and sustainable development through the growth of culture, education and science;
- Passing a new strategy for U.N.E.S.C.O. "U.N.E.S.C.O. in a Globalised World: New Humanism for the 21st Century", aimed at adjusting U.N.E.S.C.O. to cope with new global challenges;
- Being an authoritative advocate for freedom of expression, freedom of movement of ideas and the free exchange of knowledge;
- Launching a new global initiative "Culture: a Bridge to Development" and strongly emphasizing the importance of culture for development and its contribution to achieving internationally agreed development goals ("Millennium Development Goals").
