The Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, in collaboration with the Venetian District for Research and Innovation, announces Science Gallery Venice, a unique space in which science and technology will dialogue with art and design, inspiring new ways of thinking and generating innovation.

Set to start engaging audiences through pop-up activities from 2017, the gallery will open its doors in 2019 in the historical settlement of San Basilio. Rector Michele Bugliesi and Andrea Bandelli, Executive Director of Science Gallery International, signed an agreement for the development of the project which will be unique to Italy.

Michele Bugliesi, Rector of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice: "Today, we celebrate a major achievement for Ca’ Foscari and for the future of research and Venice. Joining the other members of the Global Science Gallery Network in London, Dublin, Bangalore and Melbourne, Science Gallery Venice will be a center for innovation and research in both science and the arts. It will become a source of ideas and experiments for researchers from around the world, in collaboration with international partners at the highest level. Built in the heart of Venice at San Basilio, it will continue the enhancement process of this strategic area of the city which is already underway through Ca’ Foscari, the IUAV University and the Venice Port Authority."

Dr Andrea Bandelli, Executive Director of Science Gallery International (the organisation driving the development of the Global Science Gallery Network): “Science Gallery Venice will bring the world-class contemporary art and frontier scientific research of Venice to the Global Science Gallery Network, creating endless opportunities to engage the local Venetian community with leading thinkers in art and science both in Italy and internationally. It will be a new beacon for public engagement in Italy, bringing the unique approach of Science Gallery to ignite the creativity of millions of young adults where science and art collide.

Science Gallery Venice will create and host free exhibitions and events, specifically designed for a target audience of young adults from 15 to 25 years old. It will operate its own internal and open workshops, triggering new forms of collaboration between scientists and creative arts, developing innovative education programs and enhancing the excellence of research carried out by universities and other scientific institutions in all fields of knowledge. The gallery will be a social hub, with multiple spaces for informal meetings and coffee.

The international call will soon be launched to begin selections for the Director, who will have the task of creating the community of Science Gallery Venice, and be a protagonist in the development of activities.

Science Gallery Venice has been supported from the beginning by the twelve research institutions and cultural organizations that make up the Venetian District for Research and Innovation, chaired by Michele Bugliesi. These members include: the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, the German Centre for Venetian Studies, the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music, the CORILA Consortium, the National Research Council, the Musei Civici di Venezia Foundation, the Querini Stampalia Foundation, the Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation, the San Camillo Hospital Foundation, the Procuratoria di San Marco, the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Venice International Centre for the Environment and Culture.
